Fascination~

Hey guys, my name is Nate. I'm a 19 year old male. (Not that it matters, but some of you might like to know.)

Recently- I had seen the movie I heart huckabees. (which was hilarious by the way) After i saw it, i just kind of dismissed it in my mind. But yesterday as i was sitting down, contemplating my beleifs (I'm ALWAYS thinking) the word 'Existential' popped back into my conscious consciousness.

I started looking it up online, and was reading until my eyes hurt. I couldn't beleive how passionate and alive i felt suddenly reading this philosophy. It made SO much sense to me i couldn't beleive it. I've studied alot, especially spirituality and religion, and although i have been very interested in philosophy- I've never really dug too deep.

But now it's like i am obsessed.

Can someone please help me with some information? Suggested books, etc, or even some good webpages? I have a feeling this is the beginning of a new and long journey for me with this.

I recommend Walter Kaufmann's classic "Existentialism from Dostoevsky to Sartre".

He gives a highly-readable and informed overview of the philosophy and literature often referred to as existentialist, ranging over about 150 years. He gives a fluid, entertaining commentary to a number of major figures and provides translations (often his own) of short works by each figure he covers.

He looks at Dostoevsky, Kafka, Rilke, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Camus, Heidegger, and Jaspers.

It's a great starting point to learn a little about a lot of key figures, so you can find out who really floats your boat and look at them in more depth. It's an easy book to find used.

I had the same kind of experience when I first started learning about existentialism. It was like a great beam of light... and the alternative to science and religion I was looking for. How great is it-- finally something that just examines our existance and doesn't try to form any kind of theories or explanations about it (well, pure existential phenomonlogy tries to keep that out anyway)

One class on phenominology and existentialism perminantly changed the way I looked at/ thought about the world. I only wish I'd discovered it when I was your age, although I was already reading Nietzsche a lot. Good luck in your learning!
